The Benazir Income Support project (BISP) is an anti-poverty project basically launched by Pakistan’s government. When it was originally implemented in July 2008, it was the largest single social safety net initiative in the country, with about Rs. 90 billion ($900 million) distributed to 5.4 million members in 2016. President Asif Ali Zardari encouraged Yousaf Raza Gillani in 2008 to establish the Benazir Income Support Programme. The name of the programme is a tribute to Benazir Bhutto, a former prime minister and President Zardari’s wife who was assassinated in 2007.
